De La Haye’s rainbow

De la Haye – Life is like a rainbow, you need both the sun and the rain for the colors to emerge.

We started the evening of with singing “Die Oukraal liedjie” to celebrate out Afrikaans heritage.

Theresa Nieuwoudt gives us an exercise demonstration “Chair yoga for seniors.” Small movements make a big difference.

Mianne Dippenaar tells us about “Libby”. Libby is a free app that allows users to borrow and enjoy ebooks, audiobooks, and magazines from their public library, accessible through a valid library card. Register for Libby on the App. Items “taken out” are valid for 14 days – can be renewed. If you don’t have a library card yet, remember to bring your proof of address when you apply.

Rika introduces our speaker for the evening – Heidi Rowley from Reach for a dream

Heidi introduces “Reach for a dream” to our members. It is a non-governmental organization focused on children with life-threatening diseases that can shorten their lives such as Cystic fibrosis, Duchenne’s muscular dystrophy, heart disease and of course, cancer.

Reach for a dream has been working with hospitals for 36 years to help identify children for the program. Questions are asked such as, What is your dream? What would make a difference in your life? Some children ask for dolls, others want to have one last vacation with their family and others want to meet their sports heroes. The doctors have to give permission when they want to leave the hospital for a outing. The program helps to brighten children’s days and hopefully help them make their dreams a reality.

These are particularly difficult times, emotionally, for families and teenagers – there is a special focus on cultivating support groups among themselves. There is a program called “Laughter heroes” where the aim is to visit children in hospitals and do group activities and spread happiness. There is also a “Legacy event” where teenagers can attend a matric farewell.
