De la Haye Brewing with cold brew tea and edible flowers

Our speakers for the evening were René Nel and Elizabeth Joseph

René Nel started off by demonstrating how to make different types of summer coolers using Carmién cold brew rooibos teas. She shared the recipes for the following drinks:

  1. Iced Rooibos Tea with Orange, Lemon & Ginger

For this she used the Apple Mint Cold Brew, to which she added sliced apples, oranges, fresh ginger and orange juice.

  1. Rooibos Iced Tea with Cranberry & Cinnamon

For this she used the Cranberry Hibiscus Cold Brew, to which she added cinnamon sticks, sliced lemon and apples and cranberry juice.

  1. Rooibos & Pineapple Mocktail

For this she used the Coco Pine Cold Brew to which she added pineapple juice and fresh mint leaves.

  1. Homemade Black Grape Juice

For this she boiled grapes to make a grape syrup.  She then added sprite and   lots of ice blocks.  Oh so yummy!

Rooibos tea is an excellent alternative if you’re trying to cut out caffeine. Rooibos has high levels of antioxidants and polyphenols, which are thought to be good for heart health and cancer prevention. Rooibos also contains no tannins or oxalates (two compounds that can cause digestive problems). And it’s naturally sweet.

She explained the different benefits we get from pineapples.  The pineapple has a high content of vitamin C, which plays an essential role in the growth and repair of tissues in your body. It also has bromelain, an enzyme that helps reduce swelling and inflammation. As if that weren’t enough, pineapple juice contains potassium, which helps lower blood pressure by relaxing muscles throughout the body and helping you maintain a healthy heart rhythm.

Elizabeth Joseph then did a presentation about edible and non-edible flowers. Showing examples of 10 Common edible flowers, 10 Unusual edible flowers and 10 Poisonous flowers you should never eat.  She also explained the benefits of using edible flowers, how to prepare edible flowers and some interesting tips.

Golden Rule: If you doubt whether a flower is edible or not – DO NOT EAT IT.

Each person received a gift of Biodegradable Grow Bags. Biodegradable grow bags are containers used to grow plants that are made from natural materials. They’re designed to break down in the soil, which means they won’t contribute to pollution.

I addition to this, each lady also received a succulent plant in a 3d printed container. Printed by Roy Joseph

All members left with good ideas for iced teas and edible/un-edible plants.
