Still Bay hands out earrings for Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day is widely celebrated throughout the world. Many do not know how Mother’s Day was established. Here is a short piece of history on this important day that is celebrated annually.
Celebrations of mothers and motherhood can be traced back to the Ancient Greeks and Romans who held festivals in honor of the Mother Goddesses, Rhea and Cybele.
The early Christians of the United Kingdom and Europe held Christian festivals on the 4th Sunday of lent to hour the mothers. This concept gradually faded until the early 1900’s when Anne Reeves Jarvis helped start “Mothers Working Clubs” . These clubs taught the mothers to care for their children properly. After her mother passed away in 1905, she started Mother’s Day to honor the sacrifices the mothers make for their children. By 1912 many states, towns of America had adopted and celebrated Mother’s Day. With her persistence, in 1914 Anne Reeves Jarvis had the president of America sign a proposal where Mother’s Day was officially established. It was here that it was decided that Mother’s Day would be celebrated on the 2nd Sunday of May annually. After a number of years, Anne realized that mother’s day had become commercialized, and wanted to attempt to stop Mother’s Day, however was unsuccessful.

Still Bay VLV/CWAA embarked on a project to spoil the ladies of Still Bay. We decided that we would hand out earrings on 11 May 2024. Our goal was to hand out approximately 175 pairs of earrings. Our members were encouraged to donate earrings and we had a competition. The ladies needed to crotchet 3 pairs of earrings, for the competition. These would be their donation towards the collection. The management team packed all the earrings donated with a Happy Mother’s Day card. The contact number of the Chair Lady was also recorded on the card. We eventually handed out approximately 200 pairs of earrings.

The Community was overwhelmed with the idea. The Chair lady received a whatsapp message from a lady thanking us for the gesture and a telephone call from another thanking us for the gift.
