Nicole Bovey addressed our Agriculture and Gardening meeting in March. We were overwhelmed by work that is done by her organization in around Still Bay. VLV Stilbaai donated R410 in cash, towels, doggie jerseys and food.
Nicole Bovey is the founder and Director of a Non-Profit Company FOR THE LOVE OF ANIMALS, situated in Still Bay. Nicole loves animals, hence her dream is to empower and uplift animals and their owners in townships, as well as any other needy people who have animals.
This non-profit company was established in 2021. Nicole is supported by three volunteers who assists with providing support to animals and owners of animals in and around Still Bay which includes the elderly who live off SASSA pensions.
The Organization relies on donations from organizations and the public. The donations may be in the way of cash, pet food, blankets, food bowls, old kennels and anything else that can be used to make animals comfortable, warm and happy. Fund-raising and the sale of pet accessories is also a source of Income.
“For the Love of Animals” rescues and rehabilitates animals. Some of these pets are handed back to the original families after the necessary training and care for pets has been provided. Others are adopted by parents who would provide a good home. There are approximately 70 animals adopted in a year in Still Bay.
There are many dogs that are chained up and do not have shelter. In this case “The Love for Animals” with fence the property, plant trees and provided and kennel. Many of the pet owners do not have the funds to feed their pets, here they donate food to these families.
When donations of cash are made, it is used to sterilize cats and dogs at the local vet. This is one of the key services. Cash is also used for the preparations of animals for adoption.
A very important function is providing training. Every Monday Afternoon, training is provided to children under 13 on the care of pets and animals. Training manuals are provided which are based on township living called Four Paws. There has been success, where a child attending this training has encouraged his parents to change the way their animals are treated.
Success Story.
A dog by the name of Pille is used as their mascot. This dog was used by the owners to do dog fighting. After intervention and training of the owners, they no longer use Pille for dog fighting. This dog is amazing, is in very good condition. When Nicole arrives in the township to work, he finds her and spends the day with her.
